Magic Squares

The study of magic squares probably dates back to prehistoric times. Examples have been found in Chinese literature about A.D. 1125 which were evidently copied from still older documents.

A magic square consists of a series of numbers so arranged in a square, that the sum of each row and column and of both the corner diagonals shall be the same amount.

Excerpt from W.S. Andrews – Magic Squares and Cubes.

I became fascinated by magic squares because of their potential to express resonances and patterns visually.

I began using them in experimental art works, setting up systems of numbers, sometimes in the square format and sometimes in a circular format.

I then followed the sequence of numbers through drawing, then colouring in the resulting shapes with graduations of colour, never knowing what it would end up like - this led to many exciting results.

The inspiration of revealing a mystery was always present.

The resultant works, as painted sketches or trials, prints and paintings yielded an endless path of potential discovery.
